The demand for sustainable chocolate continues unabated. In order to improve the situation of cocoa farmers in the developing countries and work together to implement fair trade in Germany, a range of representatives from the Federal Government of Germany and sectors such as the German confectionery industry, the German food trade and non-governmental organizations came together to establish the German Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa in 2012.
As one of the pioneers of sustainable trade in the seasonal chocolate sector, Confiserie Riegelein accompanied the establishment of the German Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa from the very beginning. ‘It is of paramount importance to us to collaborate in the many, long-term activities of the initiative in order to make further advances in the areas of fair trade and sustainability,’ states Peter Riegelein in explaining the decision to become a founding member of the initiative. ‘We aim to offer our customers a product that is grown and produced in an ecological and socially responsible manner.’
